Operated by the Taitung County Government, this space became a hotel and display of indigenous cultures in 2015. Its interior and exterior architectural design integrates the living culture and craftsmanship of various indigenous tribes. Its name, MATA, means “eye, seeing" to express the hope that this hotel may open many more people’s eyes to the beautiful cultures of the indigenous people in eastern Taiwan.

Space is not just a collection of hardware objects: "people" and "content" are more important elements. After the renovation, the hotel was renamed “MATA House,” with "MATA" meaning "eyes, seeing” and alluding to young indigenous coming home and elder relatives waiting for them in the village, both expectantly looking out for each other.
It is through this kind of small encounters that the MATA Indigenous Cultural Resort fosters greater understanding of indigenous culture and brings the beauty of nature closer to its guests. Thus, the hotel’s spaces become a vehicle for presenting the lifestyles, cuisines, spirituality, and attitudes of indigenous people to its guests, as well as their past, present, and hopes for the future.
